Top 2023 Grammy Nominees: Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, and Adele

With a nomination for Album of the Year, Bad Bunny makes history, and Taylor Swift wins Song of the Year for "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)."

At the 65th Grammy Awards, which will be held on February 5, 2023, BEYONCE, KENDRICK LAMAR, and Adele will all compete for multiple prizes.

This year, Beyoncé received nine nominations, placing her in the lead among all nominees.Lamar received eight nominations for his album Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers, while Adele and Brandi Carlile tied for seventh place with their records 30 and In These Silent Days, respectively.

Each of the four of those specialists, and their previously mentioned collections, are up for Collection of the Year, close by ABBA's rebound record Journey, Mary J. Blige's Great Morning Dazzling, Coldplays' Music of the Circles, Lizzo's Extraordinary, Harry Styles' Harry's Home, and Terrible Rabbit's Un Verano Sin Ti.Because it is the first time an album from Latin music has ever been nominated for Album of the Year, Bad Bunny's win is especially significant.

Record of the Year nominees for "Break My Soul," "Easy on Me," "The Heart Part 5," and "You and Me on the Rock" (featuring Lucius), respectively, are Beyoncé, Adele, Lamar, and Carlile. The other songs in that group are "Don't Shut Me Down" by ABBA, "Good Morning Gorgeous" by Mary J. Blige, "Woman" by Doja Cat, "Bad Habit" by Steve Lacy, "About Damn Time" by Lizzo, and "As It Was" by Styles.

Along with Gayle's TikTok hit "Abcdefu," DJ Khaled's monster posse cut "God Did," Bonnie Raitt's "Just Like That," and Taylor Swift's indomitable "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)," Song of the Year also includes "Break My Soul," "Easy on Me," "The Heart Part 5," "As It Was," "About Damn Time," and "Bad Habit."

In terms of the final major category, Best New Artist, there doesn't appear to be a clear favorite like Olivia Rodrigo did last year; in fact, none of this year's nominees are competing for one of the other big three awards. There is also a fascinating mix of artists who are completely new and those who have been around for a while but may now be considered "new" to Grammy voters:Anitta, Omar Apollo, Latto, Wet Leg, DOMi and JD Beck, Muni Long, Samara Joy, Molly Tuttle, Tobe Nwigwe, and Mneskin, the winners of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2021.

Even though there will be a lot of pop stars competing in the major categories at the 2023 Grammy Awards, the focus will almost certainly be on Beyoncé and Adele.Beyoncé is the most-awarded female artist in Grammy history, but she has only won a major award once (Song of the Year for "Single Ladies") and feels especially in need of an Album of the Year nomination. With Lemonade and "Formation" in 2017, she had a good chance of winning Album, Song, or Record of the Year. However, Adele won all three categories with 25 and "Hello."Adele even seemed to be put off by it all, raving about Lemonade for a portion of her Album of the Year victory speech.)

Beyoncé will continue to make Grammy history even if she does not win a major award this year. Her first shot at winning a prize in the Dance/Electronic categories comes from Renaissance and "Break My Soul."She will also surpass Hungarian conductor Georg Solti to become the most decorated Grammy winner if she wins four of the nine awards she is up for.

The 65th Grammy Awards, on the other hand, provide a wealth of information that goes beyond the main plot.A look for Best Pop Solo Performance for "Moscow Mule" and a look for Best Msica Urbana Album for "Un Verano Sin Ti" went along with Bad Bunny's historic Album of the Year nomination. The six nominations for Mary J. Blige are her first since 2015 and her first as a solo artist since she won the award for Best Contemporary R&B Album for Growing Pains in 2009.Jazmine Sullivan, who won last year's award for Best R&B Album and Performance, will be back for more, receiving nominations for both Best R&B Performance and Song for her performance of "Hurt Me So Good" and Best Traditional R&B Performance for her performance of "'Round Midnight" with Adam Blackstone.

Heavyweights like Lizzo and Styles will compete with Doja Cat, Camila Cabello, Sam Smith, and Kim Petras in the pop genre. With looks in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Pop Vocal Album categories, ABBA, who received a surprise nomination last year, will have a second chance at winning their first Grammy. In the meantime, Miranda Lamber, Maren Morris, Luke Combs, Ashley McBryde, and Willie Nelson will all compete for a variety of prizes in their respective countries.

Drake is still up for Best Melodic Rap Performance and Best Rap Song thanks to collaborations with Jack Harlow (Churchill Downs) and Future (Wait For U, also featuring Tems), despite his pointed efforts to effectively boycott the Grammys by not submitting his work for consideration. For their hit collaboration with Future, "Pushin P," Gunna and Young Thug, who are both in prison awaiting trial for alleged violations of the RICO Act, were nominated for Best Rap Song and Performance. Latto was also nominated for Best Melodic Rap Performance for her song "Big Energy."

With the exception of Brandi Carlile, whose song "Broken Horses" was nominated for Best Rock Song and Performance, the Grammys reverted to old practices in the rock categories by presenting awards solely to men. While the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beck, the Black Keys, and Ozzy Osbourne dominated those categories, indie rock torchbearers Spoon and the War on Drugs each received nominations.Even more impressive, though, are the nominations for Best Rock Performance and Album for "Crawl" and "Crawler" by British post-punk band Idles and Best Rock Song and Performance for "Blackout" and "Holiday" by Baltimore hardcore band Turnstile.

Things were somewhat seriously fascinating in the realm of elective music, where the Best Elective Music Collection grant will be joined by another award this year, Best Elective Music Execution. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Big Thief, and Wet Leg all received nominations in both categories. Björk received a nomination for Best Alternative Music Album for Fossora, marking her 16th Grammy nomination (she has yet to win).

In the genre categories, there were also some questionable nomination decisions. We received a nomination for Best Alternative Music Album from Arcade Fire, which was recently rocked by a slew of allegations of sexual misconduct against frontman Win Butler (who has denied the allegations). And Louis C.K., who has admitted to having sex with a number of women, is up for Best Comedy Album for the second year in a row, having previously won the award last year.Dave Chappelle, who has been embroiled in a prolonged controversy over his jokes about trans people, several of which appear in the special for which he was nominated, is his fellow nominee this time around.
